Things To Do

Y Fron is located at an altitude of 950 feet on the slopes of Mynydd Mawr, sometimes known as Elephant Mountain, approximately 6 miles south of Caernarfon and 2 ½ miles east of the A487 trunk road between Caernarfon and Porthmadog/Pwllheli. The village sits at the end of the road in a spectacular rural location.

It is in the middle of the 2,500 acre Uwch Gwyrfai Common, a rugged upland landscape of grass, heather and gorse grazed by free roaming sheep and occasional cattle. The area has industrial heritage from the slate quarrying era that lasted from 1820–1970, including flooded quarries, slate tips, tramways and ruined cottages and industrial buildings. This combination of high altitude open country and heritage makes it a wonderful area for walking, cycling or hill running with something of interest and fantastic views of the lowlands, the  sea or the mountains around every corner. Dogs are welcomed provided they are kept under full control and do not harass livestock in any way.

The mountains of Snowdonia begin with Mynydd Mawr 698 m (2,290 ft), on the eastern side of the village. The beach of Dinas Dinlle is just 6 miles down the hill.  Snowdonia is national park and designated Dark Sky Area.

The market town of Caernarfon is 6 miles away, with its World Heritage Castle, and excellent selection of shops, pubs and restaurants. Porthmadog is 16 miles to the south and Pwllheli is 19 miles to the southwest. Both of these towns have a wide variety of things to see and do. The University City of Bangor, 14 miles to the north east, is the regional shopping hub.

The Welsh Highland Railway runs between Caernarfon and Porthmadog, with a Halt at Tryfan Junction and a station at Waunfawr. (Approximately 5 miles away).
