The small village of Y Fron nestles below “Elephant Mountain”, in the heart of Snowdonia just 6 miles south of Caernarfon.  Originally home for workers in the surrounding slate quarries, the village lies close to parts of the UNESCO  Wales Slate World Heritage Site, and is crossed by the historic Pilgrim’s way and the UNESCO Slate Trail. It lies within easy reach of the mountains, the sea and the centres of Caernarfon, Porthmadog, Pwllheli and Bangor.  It offers a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and is perfectly located for a Snowdonia holiday.

Canolfan y Fron sits in the centre of the village and is the perfect base from which to explore this rich and varied region.  Much more than just a village shop, we offer fully accessible accommodation and  an onsite café.  There is also a hall available to hire for private functions.

Canolfan Y Fron is a community owned and led project that began when our village school Ysgol Bronyfoel closed in July 2015. A group of residents were successful in acquiring a long term lease for the building from Gwynedd County Council and in securing funding from the Big Lottery and from Welsh Government to renovate the building. It opened as a community centre in the autumn of 2018. The whole community is very appreciative of the support these three organizations have provided to us.

In renovating the building, the community has kept as many original features as possible, including the pitch pine architraves around the doors, the tongue and groove in the Llety, and the slate mullioned window on the east side of the building. We have also incorporated as many environmentally sustainable elements as possible, including air source heat pumps and under floor heating, maximum insulation, solar PV panels on the roof and electric car charging points.

By visiting the Centre and patronizing the community events or eating at the Caffi, buying at the Siop or staying at the Llety, you are helping the regeneration of our village and we thank you for your support. We hope to see you often.
